On Prayer amid Busy Days

Our days rush by between work, study and the cares of home, and we often postpone prayer until a “free moment” that never comes. This sample text suggests a few simple ideas for bringing prayer back into the rhythm of the day.

A few minutes every day

Prayer does not need a long time to begin. It is enough to set aside a few minutes in the morning and in the evening, in a quiet corner of the home, before an icon and a lamp if possible, away from the phone and its noise.

Short prayers during the day

On the way to work, or between one lesson and the next, we can repeat in our hearts a short prayer such as “Lord, have mercy”. These few words remind us that God is with us at every moment, not only in church.

Practical steps

  • Choose a fixed time, even a short one, and keep to it.
  • Begin with a prayer you know, then add your own words.
  • Read a short passage from the Gospel and reflect on it quietly.

Praying with the community

Personal prayer is not separate from the prayer of the Church. Taking part in the Divine Liturgy and in the life of the parish supports and nourishes our daily prayer, and reminds us that we are not alone on the way.

In short

Small, steady steps are better than big beginnings that stop and start. Let us begin today with a few minutes, and leave the rest to the grace of God.
